America’s Growing Gray Gap
As America’s population ages, behavioral health needs among older adults are rising—but many people still struggle to access the support they need. Experts are increasingly referring to this challenge as the “gray gap,” the widening divide between older adults who experience behavioral health concerns and those who actually receive care.
Factors such as stigma, limited provider availability, transportation barriers, and uncertainty about where to seek help often prevent older adults from reaching services. This gap can have a significant impact on overall health, particularly for individuals managing chronic conditions or major life transitions.
At BRIDGES (Behavioral Health Resources for Integrated Development, Growth, Engagement, and Support) for Older Adults, this challenge is exactly why our work focuses on helping communities recognize, respond to, and refer older adults to appropriate behavioral health supports.
